The register reads its own mail the way it keeps its entries: everything gets read, and nothing enters the log before it has been checked. A letter to the log is the surest way to change what an entry says, because it lands where the entries are actually made.

What the log welcomes

Three kinds of letter earn a place in the register. The first is a correction with its source attached: if an entry states something the record contradicts, send the standard, the certificate, the paper or the page that shows it, and we fix the entry and redate it. The second is a memory from inside the trade: the first kiln you stood beside, the mill whose sound you still recognize, the certificate that taught you to read the numbers. Recollections like those are what a logbook is made of, and a good one can grow into an entry of its own. The third is a break in the register itself: a link that went dead, a page that failed to load, a figure copied wrong. Sign the letter the way you would initial a shift entry: a name helps us answer, but the log only ever prints the note.

What the log cannot do

We read and write about the cement trade; we do not run one. The register cannot quote a price for clinker, recommend a contractor for a relining, or carry a message to a plant's management. It cannot advise on a live dispute between a buyer and a works, and it cannot certify anything: that work belongs to the laboratory, the inspector or the counsel whose letterhead signs for it. Letters of that kind are answered kindly and pointed toward the right office.

How to write

Write to [email protected]. Give the entry's title if you are writing about one, name the source or the plant where it helps, and expect a reply from a person at the register rather than a form letter. A note that is read is a note checked before it is stamped, and a letter is handled the same way: read first, verified where the record allows, and only then given its place in the log.
